KDE announces Spark Tablet for Linux enthusiasts

CES 2012 is over but the new arrivals or announcement is not over yet. Here is something new and interesting announcement from Aaron Seigo, KDE developer.

Seigo explains about the upcoming Tablet by the name Spark in his announcement. To start with, the Tablet will feature a 7inch display with KDE plasma environment. The Tablet is integrated with an ARM 1GHz processor.

When I started talking about the Tablet, I used the word “New” to stress the point that, this Tablet is going to be the first to appeal to open source software developers. It does not mean it is not for consumers.

The Tablet will run on Mer, a Linux based MeeGo platform. Seigo is excited while announcing the Tablet, which can be noted from his phrases. Here they are. “This is a unique opportunity for Free software. Finally we have a device coming to market on our terms. It has been designed by and is usable by us on our terms and we are not waiting for some big company to give us what we desire, we’re going out there and making it happen together. Just as important- the proceeds will be helping fuel the efforts that make this all possible.”

The plasma user interface shell of the Tablet seems to replace the surface for icons concept. In terms of other features, the Tablet will have a 512MB RAM and 4GB of internal storage. Further, Spark also will have SD cardView definition in a new window slot in it. The Tablet will be available for a price of approximately $262 and with regards to availability, we need to wait for some time. We will keep you updated on this as and when we hear.

From Seigo’s announcement, it seems lot of effort lies behind the development of the Tablet. Let us see in near future the other capabilities of the Tablet.
