It is the holiday season now and most people are thinking of tablets, however, it is really very confusing as there are so many to choose from. When the market had just opened up, you had the iPad and just a couple of others and choosing one was easy, rather the decision was made for you and things were pretty easy. However, today, with the array of tablets to choose from, and one trying to outdo the other, deciding is rather difficult. Apple now has several competitors to contend with. Big names like Google and Microsoft have become major players, adding to the excitement for the customers.

As there are tablets available in various sizes, you need to first decide upon the size that you want. The most popular one even today is the full sized one that was pioneered and perfected by Apple. The other is the half-sized one, Kindle Fire that was developed by Amazon.

The full-sized tablets that come with a 10-inch screen (diagonally) are best for browsing websites meant for PCs and the perfect choice to scan documents and all types of magazines. They make a perfect replacement for the cumbersome laptop. These tablets are priced in the range of $400 and above.

The half-sized tablets that have become a rage of late are the ones that have a screen measuring 7 inches (half does not mean the screen is half the size) diagonally, are lightweight and relatively cheaper. They are the perfect answer for tasks like reading e-books. It makes a great gift for kids who need a good computing device and for adults who are just being initiated into the world of tablets. The new models start from $199 and some older models are still available at much lower prices.

If you wish to settle for an Apple product, remember that Apple is known to update the iPad once every year. Hence, it is no surprise that it discontinued a new model last fall. However that iPad had a faster processor and new feature christened “Lightning” and a modified charging port that was different from the one found on the iPod. This one also had the special Retina screen know for its stunning resolution of 2048 X 1536 pixels, though the Google Nexus 10 is better comparatively.

This simply means that the current model has had two transformations in one year when you compare it to last year’s 2nd generation iPad 2 that was available last holiday season. However, the new model is worth the price because of the upgrades. The model launched last year is still on sale and now costs $100 less. So, if you don’t mind waiting, you can always get an iPad at a bargain price the next season. However, at $400, it is priced a bit high and there are several cheaper alternatives that you can check out.

One cannot deny the fact that the other tablet manufacturers are striving to keep up with Apple. However, when it comes to unbeatable quality applications and general accessories, it is still Apple that reigns supreme. The base model of the iPad though has just 16 GB storage that is woefully inadequate. Hence, if you wish to give a memorable gift, choose the 32 GB version that costs just $100 extra.

Coming to the Barnes & Noble Nook HD+ that is priced $269 upwards, it is the first attempt from a bookstore to offer an alternate to the iPad that has a screen size of 9 inches diagonally. The difference in size is insignificant and not very noticeable and the resolution at 1920 X 1280 is lower but still as good as any high definition television. The Nook has other features like letting your entire family create separate user accounts with restrictions imposed on content. The kids cannot see what you see, while you can see what they are up to.

The Nook HD+ too comes with 16 GB storage, but the trump card here is that at an additional cost of just $25, you can upgrade to 32 GB using a microSD memory card, which is not a bad deal at all. On the flip side, the Nook HD+ has very few apps and is more suited to fill in as an e-reader for books and magazines and for watching movies and videos. Unlike its other competitors, there are no cameras either. The Nook HD+ is best for bookworms and strictly not for gamers and app enthusiasts.

Another great tablet you can check out is the Samsung Galaxy Note 10. This one brings out the creativity in you as it comes with a stylus that lets you doodle and write on the screen. This tablet runs Google’s Android, which means that you have access to the several apps that were originally meant for smartphones. Though it is not as good as the iPad, the Galaxy Note 10 has just 1280 X 800 pixels re solution, though the memory can be enhanced using a memory card.

That’s a brief idea of the present day choice of tablets. There is absolutely no doubt about the fact that the iPad leads the way, all the way through. But the iPad is just not for anybody and everybody owning to its high pricing. But don’t worry as the other tablets, as mentioned above, raise their hands and say “Count on me too”.

Apple can no longer claim to be bored due to lack of competition at the top. Google Nexus 7 proved that they are a name to reckon with as they beat the iPad mini to enter the market and have established a niche in the small tablet market. Not that the 10″ segment is not threatened. Google is offering the Nexus 10 for $400 and comes complete with a2560 X 1600 display and an Exynos 5 processor that is dual core and the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean for this price is certainly a steal. This offering from Google in collaboration with Samsung (they built it) promises to jostle for the top slot, almost displacing Apple’s iPad.

It is very much like the Nexus 7 with the front devoted to the display that sports the Multitasking keys, along with the ones for Back and Home. The well concealed front facing speakers speak for themselves when they claim to be a lot better than the ordinary ones now available. The back is encased in a monolithic case that has a firm grip and sits pretty in your hands. The aspect ratio for video is an impressive 16:10 rather than the conventional 16:9 which makes the Nexus 10 a wee bit wider than the iPad 4, though it manages to carry less weight at 603g, compared to the iPad’s 652g and is thinner at 8.9mm compare to 9.4mm which is the thickness of the iPad.

The other standard features are the set of ports placed conveniently and a 3.5mm headphone jack along with MicroUSB and Micro HDMI that come with volume controls and a lock button. These are placed strategically on the top left corner of the tablet, easy to get to with your left thumb. You’ll find a 1.9 megapixel camera on the front and a 5 megapixel one on the back complete with LED flash and capable of 1090p video. The front camera should prove handy while video-chatting with friends and family, while the rear one is for more serious stuff, if you so fancy.

The scene stealer is the screen with a resolution of 2560 X 1600 that is as good as the much hyped Retina Display of iPad 3 and 4. The Android 4.2 does have an upgrade over the earlier version in the form of Quick Setting menu that lets you change the systems setting using the all new gesture action. The tablet can be used by multiple users, though app support is dismally lacking as is the case with most 10 in Android tablets. So much so, that you have more apps on the Nexus 7 than on the 10, as most apps designed for phones fit snugly into the 7 in version.

The Nexus is available in the 16 Gigabyte and 32 Gigabyte storage versions powered by Samsung dual core processor with 1.7 Gigahertz and ample speed enabled by the 2 GB random access memory. On the whole Google’s Nexus 10 comes with a fantastic screen, great specs, and above all an affordable price. People planning to buy a 10 in tablet need look no further as the Nexus 10 has it all.

Most of you who have had the opportunity to use the iPad Mini will squarely agree that the only good thing about the device is its great looks. Of course some may say something favorable about the screen and the features, but the point is, there isn’t anything new and innovative. The one point on which no one will however have a different opinion is the fact that it is not priced the right way. Simply put, there is nothing that can justify it.

In many years, engineers at Apple have had their challenge, for the first time, and that cannot be denied. They have made the job of others involved much easier, especially for those who had to work on the mini’s software. The engineers kept themselves to staying within the realm of conformists by accepting a lower resolution for the screen. Everyone at Apple had to agree with the designers that to come out with something workable in a product so thin and light needs some kind of compromise on it. However, the team’s effort in making the iPad mini give a better reading experience has paid off well at the end.

Another point that the detractors of the mini have to say is the trendier specifications that are found in the competing Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire 7HD and how much they are proving to be better in most fronts.

One of the other issues is about the price. Most say that the price tag on it is simply unjustified and it is too much with nothing to boast on special features. However, those who are already locked into using the earlier generation of iPad and aspiring for an upgraded device, the iPad Mini is a perfect fit, and the only reason they may go for it is, they are used to using it and nothing more. There is however nothing that is so inviting to users who may want to migrate towards the mini.
